Kevon Stewart
Kevon Stewart’s journey from the shop floor to district leadership was built on dedication, experience, and a deep commitment to worker’s rights.
A proven advocate, he has spent decades fighting for fair wages, safer workplaces, and stronger representation.
Kevon Stewart became the District 6 Director in October 2024, representing over 80,000 members across Ontario and the Atlantic Provinces of Canada.
Born in St. Thomas, Jamaica, Stewart moved to Canada with his family at age seven. He graduated from York University in Toronto, studying kinesiology and geography, with plans to teach and open a community centre. Instead, he began working as a machine operator at a steel plant in Scarborough, Ontario, where he joined his local union.
Stewart’s participation in a union education course ignited decades of activism. His interest in health and safety led him to train other workers on proper equipment use, serve on his local’s grievance committee, and take on roles as a steward and unit vice chair.
Recognized for his leadership skills, Stewart was mentored for the role of Staff Representative in 2004. Over the years, he provided support to unions across Toronto, Durham Region, and Eastern Ontario in sectors such as steel, manufacturing, nuclear energy, service, and health care.
In 2019, Stewart became District 6 Coordinator, overseeing committees while supporting arbitration cases and bargaining. Three years later, he was appointed Assistant to the Director of District 6, becoming the first Black rank-and-file member to hold a district leadership role in Canada.
As Assistant to the Director, Stewart managed servicing for union members, oversaw district programs, and worked with allies and employers. He also participated in international initiatives to build global worker solidarity and served on the Canadian Nuclear Workers Council to promote nuclear literacy and safety on behalf of workers in the industry.
Stewart’s activism has forged a strong connection between workers’ rights and politics. He currently serves as Executive Vice-President of the Ontario wing of the New Democratic Party (NDP) – Canada’s only labour party co-founded by union leaders.
